WP BackItUp, a WordPress backup plugin owned by Chris Simmons, needed a scalable way to drive more user reviews and improve annual license renewals to compete in the crowded WordPress Plugin Directory. As a single founder with limited time, Chris turned to Drip’s email automation to add a personal touch to outreach and to convert free (lite) users into premium customers while encouraging renewals.
Using Drip, Chris built automated onboarding campaigns that routed replies to a virtual assistant for personalized follow-up and review requests, and implemented a declining-discount renewal sequence via Drip’s API (integrated with Easy Digital Downloads). The combined automation and human touch produced dramatic results: reviews surged (near-universal when asked after positive replies), renewals increased by more than 100%, and overall plugin revenue grew 5x—while the Lite campaign alone now covers the cost of Drip.
