How E-Prescribing Can Improve Care Coordination

Huron Valley Physicians Association (HVPA) is an independent physician association of more than 630 doctors across four Michigan counties, serving a mix of primary care and specialists and ranking highly on HEDIS measures. Facing incentives from payers and employers to adopt e-prescribing—and needing a solution that supported local pharmacies, emerging mail-order options and practices of varying sizes—HVPA sought a scalable, easy-to-use system that would improve coordination and control pharmacy costs.

HVPA implemented DrFirst’s Rcopia Classic, using a robust demo rollout, workflow assessments, device options, and preloaded medication lists built from claims and PBM history; staff were trained to validate fill histories and import practice demographics. The result was faster, safer prescribing and better pharmacist communication, with solo practices reporting as much as two hours per day in pharmacy-related time savings, improved medication reconciliation (including emergency use of printed med lists), dual local/mail-order prescribing capability, and a clear return on investment that enabled wider network IT initiatives.
