Case Study: Genomics England accelerates genomic research with Dremio

A Dremio Case Study

Genomics England unifies 80+ years of genomic data with Dremio

Genomics England, a pioneering UK life sciences organization, faced significant challenges with its National Genomic Research Library. The data was fragmented across separate tables and programs, making large-scale analysis difficult and causing smaller research cohorts to be overlooked. Operating in a highly secure environment, they also struggled with complex authentication requirements and the need to enforce highly granular, row-level access controls for hundreds of concurrent research projects. They turned to vendor Dremio and its data lakehouse platform to address these issues.

By implementing Dremio's data lakehouse architecture with Apache Iceberg, Genomics England unified its fragmented data into a cohesive model. Dremio integrated seamlessly with their existing security infrastructure for authentication and used AWS Lake Formation to enforce fine-grained, real-time access control. The results dramatically improved research efficiency, eliminating the need for complex joins and accelerating time-to-insight. The platform successfully scaled to support over 80 petabytes of data while ensuring all access remains fully auditable and compliant with stringent healthcare regulations.
