Preview of the Consolidated Edison Company of New York Case Study

Consolidated Edison Company of New York locates 80% of single-phase faults within 10 minutes with Dranetz

Consolidated Edison Company of New York, a long-time user of Dranetz power quality monitoring systems, needed to reduce the time required to locate faults across its extensive distribution network. Their challenge was to quickly and accurately identify faults to enable faster repairs and improve system reliability.

Dranetz implemented a solution using its Encore Series power quality monitors integrated with Electrotek Concepts' PQView software. This system automatically acquires fault data, calculates an estimated reactance to the fault, and compares it to feeder models. The result is an estimated fault location available on the company intranet within approximately ten minutes of a fault occurring. This solution, which is accurate to within 10% of structures for about 80% of single-phase faults, has become an indispensable tool for Con Edison, reducing fault location time by hours and allowing for the rapid dispatch of repair crews.
