SA Taxi keeps 15 million journeys running smoothly with live fleet tracking

SA Taxi worked with DotModus to modernize its data and analytics environment so it could manage 22,000 minibus taxis and 15 million daily commuter trips more effectively. Its batch-based Hadoop system was too slow for real-time vehicle tracking, driver account management, and location alerts, making it hard to spot contract breaches, theft, and safety risks quickly.

DotModus implemented a Google Cloud solution using Dataflow, Pub/Sub, BigQuery, App Engine, Compute Engine, and Google Operations to stream data in real time and power a fast analytics dashboard with search and filtering. The result was a live view across more than 22,000 vehicles, near-instant access to operational data, improved fraud and safety monitoring, and a scalable platform that gives SA Taxi room for future growth.
