Anglo American partnered with DotModus to tackle a safety-critical data challenge across its mines. Workers completed paper safety checklist forms before starting tasks, but the manual process of collating and processing hundreds of forms each day risked delays that could leave mine hazards unflagged in time. DotModus used Google Cloud Platform and machine learning to help automate document capture and reduce reliance on manual data entry.

DotModus built a cloud-based scanning solution using Google Cloud’s Vision API, custom ML models, Kubernetes, Django Rest Framework, Celery, Redis, and App Engine to extract handwritten and printed text from complex checklist forms. The system can process thousands of forms a day, speeds up risk flagging and work allocation, and supports safer operations for frontline teams. It has been implemented at mines in multiple countries and is now being rolled out to dozens more sites globally.
