A dormakaba Case Study
Great Western Railway, which operates high-speed, commuter and regional services, faced a safety and operational challenge when trains stopped at shorter platforms: how to prevent doors beyond the platform from opening while keeping boarding and alighting efficient. dormakaba was asked to propose a selective door-opening device and recommended its Kaba 20 system to address the issue.
dormakaba implemented the Kaba 20 switchlock operated by the reversible Kaba dimpled key, enabling the Train Manager to lock carriage doors beyond the platform while the rest of the train unlocks normally. The solution improved passenger safety at short platforms, simplified operations through centralized key control (keys issued only to authorised staff), and gave Great Western Railway the flexibility to run longer trains on alternate routes.
