Education Realty Trust (EdR), a leading developer and manager of collegiate housing, faced persistent key-control, security, and operational challenges—notably the need to rekey mechanical locks at each semester turnover and to speed up August student check‑ins. To modernize access and reduce labor and costs, Education Realty Trust partnered with dormakaba and adopted electronic access solutions such as System 6000 software and programmable MT/RT electronic locks with RFID credentials.

dormakaba implemented its programmable electronic locking systems (MT and later RT RFID locks) integrated with System 6000 and optional Messenger wireless capability, providing per‑resident credentials, immediate cancellation/reissue of lost keys, and audit‑trail reporting. The solution is now used in the majority of EdR’s more than 70 student‑housing projects, streamlining check‑in, cutting labor and rekeying expenses, improving security and accountability, and reducing theft and liability risk.
