A dormakaba Case Study
The Home of Stephen Winthrop & Jane Williamson is a private Boston residence built to maximize independence for homeowner Stephen Winthrop, who lives with ALS. The family needed automated, low-profile door solutions that would integrate with home automation (voice/eye control planned), preserve the home’s American Craftsman aesthetics, meet tight space constraints, and remain energy efficient. dormakaba products specified for the project included MAGNEO sliding door operators and ED100 swing door operators.
dormakaba installed four MAGNEO sliding door operators and nine ED100 swing door operators on eight interior doors, with hidden wall sensors and compact ED100 units that fit the 27-inch space limit and communicate with the home’s elevator and automation systems. The MAGNEO doors remain slightly ajar with a recessed notch so Winthrop can close them with an elbow or foot, while the ED100 units provide timed openings at elevator landings; the systems are energy-efficient, preserve the home’s design integrity, and restore daily independence, privacy, and security. dormakaba also supported the project with reduced pricing and on-site coordination, and construction was completed in September 2015.
