Bibliotheca, Alexandria - Customer Case Study

Bibliotheca, Alexandria is a major cultural centre reopened in April 2002 under UNESCO to revive the legacy of the ancient library. Located just 30 metres from the Mediterranean with sections 18 m underground and 12 m below sea level, the project faced significant structural and environmental challenges—particularly protecting valuable library stocks from water and fire—so the architects engaged dormakaba for a fire protection and smoke control solution.

dormakaba implemented a fire protection and smoke-check concept using TS 93 cam-action door closers, ITS 96 integrated door closers (some with electromechanical hold-open) and BTS 80 / BTS 80F floor springs. This solution secured reliable door operation, smoke and fire containment and improved user comfort in the demanding marine and underground environment, helping safeguard the library’s collections and public access.
