Sumac, a Middle Eastern restaurant in Montreal, faced a significant challenge when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of dine-in services and a provincial curfew limited their pickup hours. This severely restricted their revenue streams, creating an urgent need to accelerate off-premise sales and find new ways to profit, especially through delivery. DoorDash worked with Sumac to implement several solutions, including optimizing their menu for delivery, adding alcohol sales, and creating a "mini market" for retail items like sauces and snacks. This strategy provided new, profitable revenue streams. As a result, DoorDash's contribution to Sumac’s total business grew from 10-15% to 35%. Comparing the first and second halves of 2020, the restaurant saw a 493% increase in their average monthly DoorDash sales and a 7% growth in their average ticket size, allowing them to retain staff and maintain consistent operations.
