Case Study: Insitu extends ScanEagle radio frequencies and range with Doodle Labs' customized Front-End Subsystem

A Doodle Labs Case Study

Insitu extends ScanEagle range 50+ km with Doodle Labs

Insitu, a subsidiary of Boeing and a pioneer in unmanned aircraft systems, faced a challenge when a customer required its ScanEagle UAS to operate at the 5.2 GHz frequency band. The company sought to avoid a full radio redesign to maintain existing certifications and minimize risk, while also gaining flexibility to easily adapt frequencies for new markets. They partnered with vendor Doodle Labs to address this need.

Doodle Labs provided a customized version of its Front-End Subsystem (FES) leveraging Prism technology. This in-line module was optimized for the ScanEagle's existing 900 MHz radio, shifting its output to the required 5.2 GHz and also acting as a power booster to significantly improve range. With this solution from Doodle Labs, Insitu expanded into new commercial and international markets with minimal redesign effort, maintained all existing clearances, and gained the ability to swap FES modules to easily support different customer frequency requirements.
