How The COVID Tracking Project Uses Connection to Further Its Mission

The COVID Tracking Project, a volunteer-driven collaboration launched by journalists at The Atlantic, needed a way to keep more than 300 mostly remote volunteers connected, engaged, and onboarded effectively while rapidly tracking critical COVID-19 data. To support this challenge, the team used Donut’s virtual coffee and onboarding products to help build community and guide new volunteers through a fully remote workflow.

With Donut, The COVID Tracking Project created automated onboarding in Slack, shared key resources and expectations, and set up meaningful connections among volunteers through regular virtual meetups. The result was strong adoption and growing engagement across the volunteer base, helping the organization sustain collaboration and continue its mission of tracking and understanding the pandemic with better data.
