Case Study: Webb City R-VII School District achieves safer community storm shelter with Dome Technology

A Dome Technology Case Study

Webb City R-vii School District builds a 2,600-person storm shelter with Dome Technology

The Webb City R-vii School District, located near Joplin, Missouri, needed a community storm shelter to protect students, staff, and local residents from dangerous tornadoes following the devastating 2011 Joplin event. With the help of Dome Technology, the district utilized FEMA grants to construct a safe shelter that meets ICC-500 specifications.

Dome Technology built a large dome structure that serves as both a gymnasium and a 24/7 community safe shelter capable of holding 2,600 people. The solution provided a cost-effective, large-scale facility that has already successfully sheltered approximately 1,000 people during a tornado warning. Dr. Kevin Cooper, the assistant superintendent, strongly recommended the dome concept for its protection and the ability to maximize the facility's size within the provided budget.
