MITRE tackles 40% food waste with Dom & Tom's iOS and Android app

Dom & Tom partnered with MITRE to address the critical challenge of household food waste in the U.S. MITRE needed to validate a method for gathering accurate food waste data from households as part of a larger study, which required developing a functional proof of concept and subsequent consumer application.

Dom & Tom designed and developed a mobile app for iOS and Android that connects to a Bluetooth kitchen scale, enabling data collection. They reverse-engineered scale protocols to ensure reliable operation and created a frictionless, encouraging user experience to drive consistent participation. The solution successfully supported MITRE's research study and evolved into a publicly available consumer app aimed at helping households reduce waste.
