DocuSign Keeps Department of Transportation in the Fast Lane

The state Department of Transportation (DOT), responsible for thousands of miles of roadway and complex projects, struggled with insecure, paper-based signing—engineers had to physically sign multi-page plans, there was no document management or automated workflow, and the department needed a legally acceptable, on-premises solution that integrated with Active Directory and SharePoint. They sought a scalable, standards-based electronic signature system that external partners could use through the department’s intranet and extranet.

The DOT chose the DocuSign Signature Appliance, integrating it with SharePoint and Active Directory to centralize certificate management and enable multi-page, legally verifiable signing. The rollout began with 200 internal engineers, expanded to external consultants via the SharePoint portal, and is scaling toward 3,000 licenses; the appliance is now used in grant management, HR forms and other workflows, significantly reducing paper handling and speeding signature processes.
