Onthehouse.com.au is Australia’s free property research portal with data on over 98% of Australian properties and more than 36 million property reports downloaded in the past year. Because its rich, legally aggregated property data is publicly available, Onthehouse was a constant target for web scrapers and malicious bots; in-house IP blocking and rate-limiting proved ineffective against attackers that used consumer ISPs, distributed hundreds of IPs (one bot used 1,000+ IPs), and generated large volumes of domestic malicious traffic.

Onthehouse implemented Distil Networks’ SaaS bot-mitigation during a quick proof-of-concept and rollout, leveraging Distil’s Known Violator database and behavioral detection to stop automated attacks. The solution immediately blocked over 20% of bad traffic, eliminated attacks from 90+ countries, and stopped thousands of Googlebot imposter requests, giving Onthehouse a more effective, configurable defense while reducing the resource drain of manual mitigation.
