STEM Support Creates a Dynamic Magnet Program

Pine Lake Elementary, a school within Miami-Dade County Public Schools, was facing a downward trend in enrollment, student achievement, and community support. To revitalize the school, it launched a new STEM magnet program focused on botany and zoology and partnered with Discovery Education to help implement this vision and support its teachers.

Discovery Education provided multi-year professional development focused on project-based learning (PBL) and supplied digital curriculum resources, including Discovery Education Experience and STEM Connect. The solution also included coaching and a STEM Family Night to engage the community. As a result, the school saw a dramatic jump in fifth-grade science proficiency scores from 27% to 65% in one year, alongside a revitalized school culture and increased community buy-in.
