Kansas City Public Central Library transforms a parking garage into 22-story Community Bookshelf with Dimensional Innovations

The Kansas City Public Library faced the challenge of integrating a new parking garage into its district, wanting it to be more than functional infrastructure. They sought to create a civic landmark that celebrated literature and reflected the community. Dimensional Innovations was engaged to provide environmental design and placemaking services to achieve this vision.

Dimensional Innovations' solution was to transform the garage's south façade into the Community Bookshelf, featuring 22 massive book spines selected with community input. Using digitally modified artwork printed on durable, translucent materials, DI engineered the installation to incorporate functional building elements like windows. The result is one of downtown Kansas City's most recognizable landmarks, turning an ordinary garage into public art that demonstrates the power of community-focused placemaking.
