A Digium Case Study
Asterisk® partner Intuit Innovation collaborated with the U.S. Army to solve a costly and unreliable personal-communications problem for deployed service members in Iraq. With soldiers separated from families by thousands of miles and reliant on expensive satellite handsets, the Army needed a scalable, reliable and cost-effective way to provide domestic calling and familiar phone features.
Intuit Innovation deployed a 10,000-concurrent-call Asterisk solution using over 20 blade servers (including 10 Asterisk nodes), MySQL dial-plan clusters, real-time billing and least-cost routing, satellite uplinks, and Nagios monitoring, along with voicemail-to-email, US-based DIDs and multiple handset options. The result was a highly available, low-cost system that met or exceeded project goals and now handles thousands of calls daily for deployed personnel.
