Town of Cheektowaga - Customer Case Study

Cheektowaga, NY—a Buffalo suburb of nearly 96,000 residents—needed to replace an aging, mixed analog telephone system that served 500 employees across 15 locations, including the mission‑critical police department and a six‑building town hall. The end‑of‑life Nortel equipment was non‑expandable, suffered voicemail failures, and lacked the multi‑site redundancy required for “Continuous Government,” all while the township faced tight budget constraints with no set‑aside funds.

Source Technical won the RFP and implemented an Asterisk 1.6 VoIP solution, installing 300 Polycom phones and redundant Dell servers at four main campuses, adding SIP trunks, voicemail‑to‑email, DID, call queues and failover capabilities. By using open‑source Asterisk they saved $60,000 in planned network upgrades (rolling it into a roughly $100,000 communications budget), completed the rollout in about eight months, and delivered lower operating costs, greater functionality and the redundancy needed for reliable, unified municipal communications.
