A Digium Case Study
Comune di Casalecchio di Reno, a northern Italian municipality of 35,000, needed to replace four aging analog PBX systems that were unstable, lacked voicemail, IVR and call-queuing, and required manual reboots several times a week. The old setup could not support high call volumes across five remote divisions (including 16 schools and emergency services), was slow and costly to reconfigure, and failed to meet the city’s management and budget requirements, so after a four-month evaluation the city selected Digium’s Switchvox.
Digium installed a central Switchvox 355 appliance connecting 330 IP phones (up to 400 users) across the municipality via HIPER LAN, delivering an easy-to-manage IVR, robust call queues, detailed logging, voicemail/fax via IMAP, softphones, and CRM/chat integrations. The result was faster provisioning (minutes instead of days), about $14,000/year in connectivity savings, and a stable, user-friendly system that restored reliable citizen access and met the ICT team’s goals within budget.
