ITCenter, a Digium Select Partner, teamed with Wavecom and Portugal’s FCCN to deploy a countrywide Asterisk-based VoIP system across 48 public higher-education institutions. The challenge was to leverage the existing gigabit research network to cut communications costs by at least 20% while avoiding replacement of aging legacy PBX hardware and minimizing disruption to users.

Using Asterisk and OpenSER to convert analog PBX signals and transparently route calls over IP, the solution provided centralized management and billing, processed roughly 7 million calls per month, and is supported 24/7. The rollout reduced reported communications spending (from €4M to €3.3M), delivered annual savings of €1.7M, met the project timeline and earned ITCenter the 2010 Digium Innovation Award.
