Carousel Auto Group, a multi-franchise dealership in Iowa City with more than 100 employees across three locations, faced urgent telephony problems after a lightning surge damaged its aging Teleconnect phone system. The outage exposed chronic issues: calls couldn’t be easily transferred between buildings, extensions couldn’t follow sales staff as they moved, a single ring tone and limited paging caused confusion, and a prior proprietary VoIP install lacked the bandwidth and flexibility needed for the dealership’s multi-site operations.

The company implemented Digium’s open-source Asterisk PBX, deploying servers with TDM cards and IP phones across sites and linking buildings over VPN. The new system enabled call queuing and routing, multi-location paging, variable ring tones, easy extension mobility, and simple phone additions. As a result, inter-building communication and call-handling speed improved, receptionist workload and caller confusion dropped, and overall staff efficiency and productivity increased.
