1st Guard Corporation is a hybrid underwriter and insurance agency for lease-owner-operator truckers based in Venice, FL, with satellite offices in Orlando and Dallas. After two years of searching, the company needed to replace an aging, proprietary Avaya phone system that was hardware-locked, incompatible with their Mac/Unix environments and homegrown applications, and unable to provide a simple cold-spare disaster-recovery failover—while avoiding the high cost of Cisco or the loss of customization from hosted cloud options.

They tested and deployed Digium’s Switchvox (with Polycom hard phones and Bria softphones) and installed a Switchvox AA305 cold-spare in Dallas, integrating easily with their ATHIA and CACTI applications and improving queue management, call rules and logging. The system was implemented with minimal training in about 2½ months, delivered the required disaster recovery and customization, and achieved substantial savings compared with Cisco alternatives.
