A Digital Realty Case Study
Rackspace, the leading managed cloud provider, needed cost-effective, scalable colocation outside downtown Chicago without sacrificing low-latency connectivity or network redundancy. Downtown demand made space expensive and limited, so Rackspace sought a suburban data center that could seamlessly connect its East and West Coast networks while remaining affordable and reliable.
Rackspace colocated at Digital Realty’s Open-IX–certified Elk Grove Village facility, which hosts the AMS-IX Chicago exchange and offers Inter-Data Center Dark Fiber and peering from 100 Mbps to 100+ Gbps. As a result, Rackspace established multiple interconnections, improved network redundancy to sustain a 100% uptime SLA, and avoided third‑party last-mile fees (the AMS-IX node sits less than 100 meters from DFT CH2), keeping peering costs to a minimum.
