Counsyl is a South San Francisco genetic sequencing startup that has run over 350,000 tests and is scaling toward millions of samples a year by offering high-quality, lower-cost genetic screening. Its sequencing machines produce massive volumes of data, and the company needed more power, cooling, redundancy and a dedicated, high‑bandwidth connection to AWS because expanding on‑premises capacity was too costly and not sufficiently scalable.

Counsyl colocated at Digital Realty’s Oakland facility and adopted Digital CloudConnect to establish a direct connection to AWS EC2, enabling a hybrid cloud approach: web services on AWS, heavy DNA analysis on EC2, and core services in colocation. The result is faster, more reliable large‑data transfers, improved uptime and an agile, scalable infrastructure that supports current operations and future growth.
