Case Study: InfluxDB achieves rapid, low-cost on-demand deployments with DigitalOcean

A DigitalOcean Case Study

Preview of the InfluxDB Case Study

How InfluxDB Uses DigitalOcean

InfluxDB is an open-source time-series database built to handle large volumes of time-based data (server metrics, analytics, sensor data) with a scalable API. After initial community uptake, customers began asking for easy production deployment and hosting; InfluxDB wanted an on-demand platform where each instance runs in its own VM to avoid multi-tenancy concerns and let users spin up single nodes or clusters quickly.

They built a Ruby on Rails front end with Sidekiq that uses DigitalOcean’s REST API and RubyGem to provision pre-built droplet images in under a minute, create DNS entries via Route 53, and finalize instance setup over SSH. DigitalOcean’s fast provisioning, regional sizes, and low-cost $5 servers enabled free trials and a cost-effective, developer-friendly lifecycle (create/update/destroy), resulting in an on-demand platform that lets customers deploy InfluxDB for development, staging, and production.
