A DigitalOcean Case Study
Compose (formerly MongoHQ) set out to bring its auto-scaling, managed MongoDB platform to DigitalOcean after frequent customer requests and questions about performance. The challenge was to prove the platform could meet Compose’s high performance and reliability standards on DigitalOcean infrastructure and to answer customers’ concerns about real-world behavior across datacenters.
Compose partnered closely with DigitalOcean engineers to run rigorous tests (fio for I/O and YCSB for simulated load), validated results in DigitalOcean’s Singapore test environment, then launched in New York using Chef and DigitalOcean’s UI/API. A beta in April and full production in June showed strong user uptake with no major issues; a single boot-time glitch was quickly resolved with DO support, and Compose expanded to London and San Francisco and doubled New York capacity as demand grew.
