Creating & Publishing Virtual Trail Maps with CommunityView

The City of San Juan Capistrano, home to an active equestrian and outdoor community with 70 hiking and horse trails, faced growing resident demand for more detailed, interactive trail information beyond the traditional paper maps available on its website. Residents wanted self-service access to trail details, driving directions and media so they could better plan visits without contacting city staff.

To meet that need the City partnered with Digital Map Products to publish Virtual Trail Maps via the CommunityView™ platform using a Bing Maps interface. The solution combined new GPS data, 360° trail videos on YouTube, trail statistics and directions into an interactive web map. The result: positive resident feedback, significant reductions in phone and in-person information requests, time savings for staff, and a scalable model the City can extend to other infrastructure mapping.
