A Digimarc Case Study
Procter & Gamble needed a better way to automate high-speed quality checks on dish soap production without the aesthetic and space drawbacks of visible 2D Data Matrix codes on small secondary labels and curved containers. Ensuring correct artwork and part numbers on every product is critical to P&G’s quality promise, so the company partnered with Digimarc and Cognex to trial a less intrusive coding approach.
P&G applied Digimarc’s imperceptible, surface-redundant barcode to Dawn and Fairy labels and integrated Digimarc software into Cognex DataMan 262 readers. Pilot runs in three plants showed high read rates, improved scanning on cylindrical shapes, minimal brand/design impact, and identified opportunities to reduce the number of inspection cameras—lowering capital and maintenance costs—leading to production use of the solution.
