Finnish Red Cross improves volunteer matching with Digia after 10,000 registrations in 3 months

The Finnish Red Cross faced the challenge of effectively organizing a surge of thousands of new volunteers, a situation highlighted during the 2015 asylum seeker crisis. They partnered with vendor Digia to leverage service design and data analytics to better understand volunteer motivations and improve engagement.

Digia combined service design workshops with data analysis to categorize volunteers, which overturned previous assumptions and revealed new insights. This allowed the Finnish Red Cross to automate communications, match volunteers to more suitable tasks, and develop targeted training. The project, winner of Digia's Digiarvoa competition, created permanent operating methods that enable more people to receive help faster.
