Case Study: SWK (municipal utility of Krefeld) achieves real-time home energy visualization and customer engagement with Digi International's Extended Grid Solution

Wirelessly Connecting the Future of Energy Distribution

Digi partnered with municipal utility SWK and other E-DeMa consortium members to pilot a locally networked “energy marketplace” in Krefeld that encourages consumers to actively manage gas, water and electricity use. The core challenge was delivering simple, near–real-time visualizations that would engage customers and, crucially, work with Siemens AMIS smart meters used in participants’ homes.

Digi built a custom Android app (tablet and smartphone) and a web interface, powered by the Digi Extended Grid Solution using ConnectPort X2 gateways, Wireless M‑Bus and Digi Remote Manager to relay OMS meter data to users. The solution was deployed to 125 volunteer households with very positive usability feedback; as a turnkey, cloud-based platform it scales to millions of users and proved beneficial to both customers and SWK.
