Wireless Internet Connection Enables Railway Control Systems

OEM Technology Solutions designs onboard control and condition-based monitoring systems for rail operators, powering more than 20,000 rail cars worldwide. To deliver preventative maintenance, improve asset utilization and passenger experience (reliable HVAC, timely arrivals and onboard Wi‑Fi), the company needed a way to connect its controllers and telemetry to the Internet for remote access to location, equipment status and other critical data.

OEM deployed Digi’s ConnectCore Wi‑9C modules and TransPort WR44 cellular gateways (with Digi Remote Manager support) to provide wireless connectivity, GPS and passenger Wi‑Fi. This enabled real‑time telemetry and remote diagnostics so operators can spot issues early, schedule overnight repairs, optimize HVAC energy use and improve on‑time performance—reducing downtime, cutting maintenance costs and enhancing the customer experience.
