Tracking Hand Washing Decreases the Spread of Infection at Hospitals; Lowers Expenses

Clean Hands Safe Hands (CHSH) is a non-intrusive wireless system that helps hospitals monitor hand-hygiene compliance to reduce the spread of infections. Faced with high rates of hospital-acquired infections and the need for seamless, background communication that wouldn’t trigger unnecessary alerts or disrupt staff workflows, CHSH required a reliable, low-impact solution that could accurately record individual sanitizing events across busy clinical environments.

CHSH deployed Bluetooth badge reels that uniquely identify staff and communicate with dispenser-mounted sensors tied into Digi’s XBee Gateway and ZigBee mesh network, with data routed to the cloud via Digi Remote Manager. The system provides subtle reminders, records compliance at the individual level, runs on year-long badge batteries, and was simple to install—requiring only a brief IT approval—enabling rapid rollouts with partners like Emory and Children’s Healthcare and positioning CHSH to scale while improving patient safety and lowering infection-related costs.
