Lumca Smart Pole Solution Helping Cities and Towns Extend the Value of their Lighting Infrastructure with Connected Services

Lumca, a Quebec City–based outdoor lighting manufacturer, saw an opportunity to transform century-old streetlight poles into multi-service urban infrastructure as cities migrate to LEDs and demand more citizen services. Municipalities wanted to add cameras, Wi‑Fi, sensors, charging and signage without building new networks, but Lumca lacked in-house wireless expertise and needed a reliable connectivity partner to scale the idea.

Lumca developed the Smart Pole — an integrated lighting solution with power, sensors and a centralized GUI — using Digi TransPort WR44R cellular routers and Digi Remote Manager for secure, manageable connectivity. The platform now supports lighting controls, surveillance, environmental sensors, billboards, charging stations and Wi‑Fi; customers are enthusiastic, municipal sales are gaining traction, and early results show the solution is opening new revenue and service opportunities.
