Lodging Technology, an originator of infrared sensor-based hotel energy management systems, faced a challenge with its hardwired GEM System product. Installing wiring under carpets was difficult and timely, limiting their market to properties with carpeted floors and specific wiring codes. To overcome this and access new markets like tiled resorts, they partnered with Digi International and implemented a solution using Digi XBee ZigBee modules.

The solution involved integrating Digi XBee modules into a new wireless system with occupancy sensors, transceivers, and door switches. This allowed the components to communicate wirelessly to efficiently manage a room's HVAC based on occupancy. For Digi International, the results included a system that was easier to deploy and maintain, which opened up new markets.
