Digi XBee Enables Street Light Management System

CIMCON Software’s LightingGale system replaces traditional photocells with Street Light Controllers (SLCs) that monitor electrical parameters and enable remote dimming, scheduling and fault alerts to cut maintenance and energy use. The challenge was delivering a rugged, reliable mesh network across the mountainous, densely vegetated and storm-prone island of St. John, where high humidity, regular thundershowers and hurricanes made communications between SLCs and gateways the highest deployment risk.

CIMCON deployed Digi XBee-PRO ZB modules and used Digi’s K-Node simulation service to validate network performance. More than 650 SLCs now communicate across the 28-square-mile island using only two gateways (including links of up to 1.7 miles over water), connecting to LightingGale for energy monitoring, smartphone alerts and remote control. The same XBee mesh is being extended to ~60 electrical reclosers across the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the solution delivered reliable in-field performance with minimal post-deployment support.
