Digi XBee-Enabled Sensors Monitor Harsh Environments

Libelium, a Zaragoza-based R&D company that develops wireless sensor hardware for environmental monitoring, faced the challenge of reliably transmitting sensor data from isolated or hard-to-reach sites and interconnecting networks across different frequencies. The team needed radio modules that provided long-range links, low power consumption, and flexibility to reach international markets and multiple protocols.

By using Digi XBee modules, Libelium built the Waspmote — a low-power, modular sensor node that measures humidity, temperature, CO2, vibration and more and can send alerts or data to processing centers. The Digi radios (868–900 MHz and 2.4 GHz) gave protocol and power flexibility and enabled ranges of up to 7 km (2.4 GHz), 24 km (900 MHz) and 40 km (868 MHz), supporting applications from forest-fire detection and smart irrigation to logistics monitoring while meeting Libelium’s reliability and deployment requirements.
