A Digi International Case Study
winAMR Systems, an Indian smart-meter solution provider, faced the challenge of improving grid reliability and metering accuracy after widespread outages highlighted the need for smarter networks. Their legacy power-line-communication (PLC) approach suffered from accuracy and authentication limits and could not meet requirements for standard protocols, low power, remote metering, multicast, outage and peak-load management, and easy API integration.
winAMR adopted Digi’s XBee ZNet 2.5/XBee‑PRO ZNet 2.5 ZigBee modules, which delivered a ready ZigBee stack, simple configuration and low power consumption, enabling a ZigBee-per-meter network with a single GSM/GPRS data concentrator to push data to the backend. The change eliminated per‑meter SIMs (cutting monthly carrier costs from Rs.70,000 to Rs.2,300 per 1,000 meters), yielded Rs.40.62 Lakhs savings per 1,000 meters over five years, improved data accuracy and operational control, and gave winAMR a clear competitive advantage.
