Devergy Expands Solar Power Possibilities in Africa

Devergy is a social enterprise that builds village-sized solar micro-grids to bring affordable, reliable electricity to low-income, off-grid communities in Tanzania and Ghana. Serving customers who often earn less than $2 per day and previously relied on kerosene, batteries and firewood, Devergy faced the challenge of delivering a scalable, low-cost energy solution where traditional power grids are impractical.

Devergy used Digi XBee modules and ConnectPort X4 gateways to create a remotely monitored, mesh-based solar network with prepaid smart meters (integrated with mobile payments like M‑Pesa) and trained local village agents for support. The plug-and-play system reduced maintenance, cut lighting costs up to 20% and phone-charging costs by 50%, has connected over 1,000 customers since 2012, and is expanding across regions and into Ghana.
