Claro, the wireless operator in Guatemala, needed a way to offset declining voice revenue by launching a mass-market location-based service that would work on any handset without GPS, maps, or complex interfaces. Its network also lacked a Gateway Mobile Location Center, creating a technical challenge for delivering location information. Dialogic’s DSI signaling solution was part of the approach used to make the service possible.
Claro launched Servicio de Localizacion de Claro using Creativity Software’s FamilyWise platform, with Dialogic’s DSI Signaling Interface Unit helping substitute for the missing GMLC and support network interrogation for real-time location data. The SMS-based service quickly processed thousands of requests, achieved sign-up rates above 5%, and is estimated to have the potential to generate up to US$291 million per year if replicated across other América Móvil markets.
