A Desktop Metal Case Study
Alpha Precision Group, a metal parts producer, sought to offer a full portfolio of manufacturing solutions, including metal additive manufacturing, to its diverse industrial customer base. Their challenge was to efficiently produce small, complex metal parts and develop metal injection molding (MIM) projects without the high cost and long lead times of traditional hard tooling. They turned to vendor Desktop Metal, adopting their Studio System and later their Shop System binder jetting technology.
The solution from Desktop Metal involved implementing two Shop System printers and Live Sinter software. This enabled Alpha Precision Group to use binder jetting as a bridge to MIM, allowing for rapid design iteration, early production development, and direct digital manufacturing of low-volume, complex parts like a stainless steel instrument capo. The results included the ability to deliver prototype or first parts in as little as five days, ship production orders without tooling investment, and solve design problems impossible with traditional MIM, all while continuing to optimize designs throughout production.
