How Notre Dame Reimagines the Campus Experience with Real-Time Data

The University of Notre Dame, a leading higher education institution, faced challenges with overcrowding in key campus facilities like its library and dining halls. This caused students to waste time searching for available space and made it difficult for administrators to accurately prepare food, leading to waste. To address this, the university partnered with vendor Density to find a solution using its occupancy analytics platform and Depth Processing Units (DPUs).

Density implemented a proof-of-concept installation in the library, which provided accurate, real-time, and anonymous occupancy counts. Following its success, the solution was expanded to a major dining hall. The data allowed the dining team to optimize food preparation, reducing spending and waste. Furthermore, the data was integrated into the school's mobile app, enabling students to check occupancy levels and avoid crowded areas, directly improving the campus experience.
