TransAlta, a century-old power producer with more than 2,300 employees, ~$3B in annual revenue and 60+ generation facilities across North America and Australia, set out to eliminate its data center footprint and move all data to the cloud to cut infrastructure costs and gain scalable flexibility. The migration ran into obstacles: several applications relied on on‑premises authentication that couldn’t be easily reconfigured for cloud access, and geographic distance to some data centers introduced latency.

TransAlta deployed the Denodo Platform for Azure as a real-time data access layer, abstracting data-center complexity, centralizing authentication, and smoothing the cloud migration. The platform also served as a virtual data mart for energy trading (avoiding costly ETL and enabling near‑real‑time access), supported Wind Operations in real‑time icing-risk decisions, and delivered an HR dashboard that integrates SAP BW, HANA, SQL Server and Active Directory—resulting in a smoother cloud transition, better governance and real‑time operational insights.
