The Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat) is Italy’s main producer of official statistics and serves citizens, policymakers, and the national statistical system. Faced with new legal requirements to produce annual censuses, the need to modernize aging processes, integrate 200+ administrative and survey sources, and exploit new data types (web, IoT, social), Istat required a flexible, cost‑efficient data architecture to improve data quality, governance, and timeliness.

Istat implemented a modern data framework centered on the Denodo Platform’s data virtualization layer to aggregate heterogeneous sources without costly replication, build thematic registers, and streamline the full data lifecycle. The solution simplified governance by creating a single access layer, enabled new use cases (for example, direct retail consumer price data ingestion), reduced manual effort and investment cost, and improved the quality and agility of Istat’s statistics and analytics.
