Statistics Netherlands (CBS), the Netherlands’ national statistics office founded in 1899, faced rising demand for timely, highly detailed and customer‑tailored statistics while having to integrate diverse internal and external data sources and protect personally identifiable information. The challenge was to provide fast, flexible access to many data types and users without compromising legal privacy requirements.

Using the Denodo Platform, CBS implemented a company‑wide data virtualization layer that links on‑prem databases, flat files, big‑data stores and external datasets to statistical processes and applications. The new architecture improved data access and application performance, enabled real‑time visualizations (e.g., UN shipping data) and allowed universities to analyze graduate outcomes with centralized masking of PII—delivering real‑time, customer‑tailored statistics while safeguarding identities.
