Indiana University Improves Strategic Decision Making Across the Organization Using Data Virtualization

Indiana University, a multi‑campus institution with eight locations serving over 114,000 students and 19,000 employees, launched the Decision Support Initiative to improve decision making across the system. The university struggled with siloed data and business logic, slow, resource‑intensive ETL processes, inconsistent definitions and missing elements, and uneven row‑level security outside the enterprise data warehouse—delaying access to timely, accurate, and secure information.

IU implemented the Denodo Platform to create a logical data warehouse via data virtualization, connecting sources like Oracle, MS‑SQL, Amazon Redshift, web services and Box to consumers such as Tableau, Excel and a Denodo self‑service front end. The solution delivered near‑instant access to blended data, centralized BI logic, fine‑grained access control and auditing, and reduced development overhead—improving agility, security and decision making across the university.
