Zara Manages Fast Growth in Apparel Market with Automated Logistics

Zara, an iconic global fashion retailer, was challenged with managing its spectacular growth and the immense logistics requirements of distributing over 80 million items a year to stores worldwide. To support its expansion, it built a massive new distribution center in Meco, Spain. Zara partnered with vendor Dematic to design and implement an automated logistics solution to meet its demanding business model.

Dematic implemented a complex automated system based on a batch pick and sort concept. The solution featured two cross-belt sorters capable of handling 80,000 units per hour, automated miniload warehouses, and over 10 kilometers of conveyor. This Dematic system enabled Zara to dispatch any European store order within 24 hours and any global order within 48 hours, providing the capacity to support the brand's continued future growth.
