Wells' Dairy, a major ice cream and dairy producer, faced significant challenges due to double-digit growth that exceeded the capacity of its existing automated storage system, leading to high third-party warehousing costs. To consolidate distribution and regain control, they partnered with Dematic to find a long-term solution for their frozen storage needs that would eliminate outside storage and reduce handling.

Dematic designed and implemented a large-scale expansion in two phases, adding to the existing system and constructing a new seven-aisle, high-rise automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS). This solution provided a massive increase in capacity to 53,420 pallets and ensured consistent temperature control. The Dematic system is designed for high throughput, handling 253 pallets in and 319 out per hour, which successfully eliminated extra handling and outside storage costs while providing a platform for future expansion.
